Fallout 76 Trailer Drops with November 14 Release Date
It seems like Bethesda just couldn’t wait for E3 to show off Fallout 76. In a move surprising to many, the company had a slew of information to dish out at Microsoft’s E3 press conference on Sunday. This was complete with numerous trailers, gifs, gameplay, release dates, and piles of information, so here it all is.
Todd Howard, Bethesda’s game director, helmed the biggest part of Bethesda’s showcase, which meant going into plenty of details on Fallout 76. While gamers still have lots of questions, he did a pretty admirable job of pointing out the specifics and trying to answer all the questions fans might have.
- Yes, the game is online
- The game can be played solo by “exploring a world, doing quests, experiencing a story and leveling up” all without having to team up with online players.
- Many of the features of the game will be enhanced or applicable in multiplayer only.
- Death is not final. In Howard’s words, “Death never means loss of progression or loss of a character”
- The map will be four times larger than the Fallout 4 map
- It will have 100% dedicated servers with each server having dozens of players
- Progression follows a player even if they join a new session with friends
- Fallout 76 takes place in West Virginia and will have six distinct regions with their own creatures and themes
- There will be a wealth of new or reworked enemies, many of them drawn straight from the history of West Virginia
- Graphical detail in Fallout 76 will be sixteen times greater than in Fallout 4
- An all new building function – C.A.M.P. – will replace the building from Fallout 4
- It will include a BETA (in the coming months)
- Fallout 76 will release on November 14, 2018
Howard didn’t pull many punches in showcasing Fallout 76. His presentation showed several clips of what to expect from gameplay including single player, multiplayer with friends, and finding less than friendly players while online. He also dropped a few of the more unique and fun features of the game. For instance, the map will be home to four different nuclear missile silos. Provided players can find the launch code, they will be able to launch a strike on any location in the game. To launch a strike, players will have to find the villain holding onto the launch code – but it has been separated among many people. The missile won’t launch until all of the launch code has been assembled. This means for anyone looking to do some serious damage, multiplayer is a must. It also means killing someone and looting their keycode isn’t a bad idea, especially if you are looking to nuke someone’s hometown or stop someone else from doing that to you.
While Fallout 76 will definitely include elements from games like Fortnite or Rust, Howard was quick to point out how long the game has been in development. Four years ago, Bethesda started toying with how to create their vision for the game. The goal wasn’t to make something that was a clone of a popular experience but to make something entirely new. Fallout 76 could be most closely compared to Rust, but the ability to pursue a single-player mode autonomously also brings to mind Dark Souls or even the very early Diablo II. The largest difference is that Fallout 76 will always be online, whereas other games have a choice of offline.
If Bethesda has done Fallout 76 properly, they may be creating a wholly unique online experience, just as From Software has done with their games. For critics that had thought an online Fallout would simply be a Battle Royale, this showcase quickly proved otherwise. It also won’t be exactly like Rust or other survival genres. In Howard’s own words, Fallout 76 won’t be for hardcore gamers, but it will be “softcore survival.” From all the information so far, it will be a blend of many models already out there but with elements uniquely its own.
With how quickly Bethesda is releasing info on the game, we are sure to have plenty more to dig into over the next few days.
