FB.gg is Facebook’s Answer to Twitch

by | Jun 8, 2018 | Livestreaming, News, News Section

If you’re reading this, you’re probably familiar with Twitch. And if you’re a human being, you probably have or at least had a Facebook. Well now you don’t have to worry about Twitch anymore. It’s obsolete thanks to Facebook’s new game streaming site, FB.gg.

And if you thought those last couple sentences were stupid,  you’re probably not alone. Twitch is a multi-billion dollar business owned by one of the most successful companies in the world, Amazon. If Facebook wants to compete with Twitch, they’re going to have to do a lot more than create a .gg website.

Twitch vs FB.gg

You can’t really blame Facebook for trying. Twitch and YouTube have proven that streaming can be a massively lucrative venture. The problem with FB.gg is in its execution.

If you check out the site, you’ll notice that it looks a lot like every other Facebook page. There’s really nothing special about it. It’s not even as unique as the Live Videos section or Events page.

Facebook is already struggling with an exodus of young people from their site, so it makes sense that they would try to capture the predominantly younger gamer audience. The problem is, there doesn’t appear to be any reason to use FB.gg over Twitch or any of the other streaming options out there. The only “upside” to the site is that it’s Facebook, so if you’re already super into Facebook, then maybe it’ll get you to stay. That being said, it doesn’t seem likely that users will choose to leave other services in favor of FB.gg.

Layout isn’t the only problem, there’s a strange hierarchy of games on Facebook’s gaming site too. It’s no surprise that Fortnite is the top game, but five of the top ten games are battle royales and two are mobile games. Furthermore, five of the top ten games on FB.gg aren’t even in the top 100 games streamed on Twitch. One explanation for this could be the relatively low overall viewer numbers, but it’s still strange.

FB.gg isn’t off to a great start, but if anyone can turn tings around, it’s likely to be them. Check it out  for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments below!
