Generation Zero: The New 80s Robot Shooter from Avalanche Studios
Set in Sweden during the 1980s, Generation Zero is an all new IP from Avalanche Studios that pits a group of young people against the robot infestation that’s taken over their homeland.
It’s an open world game and appears to be part Left 4 Dead, part Horizon Zero Dawn and part 80s nostalgia. The background music throughout and the synth piece at the end of the trailer in particular, gives the game a very distinctly 80s vibe. Best of all, that end song was done by Avalanche’s own in-house composer, meaning we should be hearing plenty more like it throughout the game.
Generation Zero is the first self-published game from Avalanche and is set for release next year. Luckily, E3 is next week so we likely won’t have to wait long to learn more about the game.
It’s been a busy few weeks for Avalanche Studios, who’re best known as the developers behind the Just Cause games. Bethesda just recently announced that the long-rumored Rage 2 is indeed in production and being developed by id Software and Avalanche. The game is also scheduled for release in 2019 and we’ll no doubt see more of it during Bethesda’s E3 presentation.
Just a few days after the Rage 2 announcement, Avalanche revealed that they were under new ownership. Nordisk Film, the 111-year-old Danish film company, acquired Avalanche as “part of its strategy of investing heavily in successful Nordic game studios.”
Of course, the biggest Nordic studio is undoubtedly THQ Nordic, who are having a groundbreaking year of their own.
Avalanche won’t have their own press conference during E3, so keep an eye out for Generation Zero during either the Sony or Microsoft showcases. And be sure to watch the Bethesda press conference on Sunday, June 10 for more Rage 2 action.
