Totally Accurate Battlegrounds Is The Indie Battle Royale You Never Knew You Needed
The battle royale genre is full of blockbuster hits, copycats and money grabs. Then there’s Totally Accurate Battlegrounds, the parody battle royale that laughs in the face of all that.
Developed and published by Landfall, creators of the classics Clustertruck and Clustertruck OST, TABG is a game that works similarly to others in the genre. You dive from a vehicle, in this case a flying truck, onto and an island and duke it out with 100 other players to see who can be the last one standing.
The two key differences of TABG are the physics-based gameplay and the fact that the game is wacky as hell. Not wacky in a “let’s make a unicorn pickaxe” kind of way, but wacky in a “let’s have weird humanoid characters that flop around and can dual-wield suppressed, scoped Lugers” kind of way.
As the developers put it, TABG is just a bunch of weirdos fighting it out on an island where everything is silly and possibly a bit buggy. Fortunately, whereas PUBG is buggy in an annoying and frustrating way, TABG’s bugs make the game even more fun and unpredictable.
Of course, if you’re looking purely for a skill-based game that you can take super seriously, TABG probably isn’t for you. Instead, it’s a raucously fun game that was originally made as an April Fool’s prank and should be treated accordingly.
Best of all, the game is free during its first 100 hours. That means it’s free until roughly Saturday afternoon PST. After that, if you haven’t already downloaded it, it’ll cost you $4.99 on the Steam marketplace. Luckily, Landfall has a countdown timer on their website that’ll tell you exactly when the free download window runs up in your timezone.
And if you’re the sort of person who takes user reviews seriously, then rejoice. Totally Accurate Battlegrounds already has over 2,500 reviews on Steam and they’re overwhelmingly positive.
