Will Building Become the Newest Trend In Gaming?

The first trailer for Dice’s Battlefield V launched this week and along with it came a torrent of new details. EA says the game will be ditching loot boxes and the ‘premium pass’ model and introduced a slew of game changes. One key change that seems to be flying under the radar is the game’s new building mechanic.

Battlefield V isn’t taking on the battle royale genre like Black Ops 4, but it looks like the dev team at Dice still managed to find some inspiration from Fortnite.

Building in Fortnite

Building is one of the most unique and entertaining aspects of Fortnite. More than anything else, it’s what sets the popular battle royale apart from its competition. While it’s unlikely that the new Battlefield will have as ludicrous of a building system as Fortnite, there’s no doubt that building could have a huge impact on Battlefield’s traditional gameplay.

So far, details on the building mechanic are relatively sparse. We haven’t seen it in action yet, but Dice did reveal that it will include plenty of construction and destruction. Of course, destructive environments are nothing new for the Battlefield franchise, but now destruction will be delivered on a more unique basis. Things will be destroyed and fall apart based on the actual damage dealt to them, meaning that you probably won’t just be hitting walls with a pickaxe over and over again until they explode.

Fortnite Pickaxe

Building is rumored to be slightly more realistic and diverse than Fortnite as well. While you probably won’t be able to build massive sky fortresses, each player will be equipped with a toolkit that will allow them to fortify structures and possibly do things like dig trenches and repair encampments. Dice has yet to clarify if all players will have the same building capabilities or if certain classes will be more apt than others.

If Battlefield V can find success with its building, there’s a good chance it could become the next must-have mechanic in gaming.

Battlefield V is set to release on October 19 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
