Dallas Fuel Acquire Fusion University’s Coach Aero

In a recent announcement, the Dallas Fuel have named Aero as their new head coach. For any fans of the contender teams, he will be immediately recognizable. For the Overwatch Contenders, Aero was the most dominant coach there was. Although he parted ways with Fusion University days before the jersey fiasco and their win in the finals against Toronto, he still brought the team all the way through the ranks, positioning them to win the finals.

Under his guidance, Fusion University had an undefeated season, which says a lot for an already impressive record. Aero has worked as a head coach for FNRGFE as well as coached TSM and the Immortals. Mike Rufail, Dallas Fuel’s owner, spoke about Aero’s new multiyear contract with the team.

“We have a lot of respect for the success Aaron has achieved as a coach in competitive Overwatch. His work this year with Fusion University speaks for itself, putting together an undefeated run with players from across the globe who are playing together for the first time. And when we won Overwatch Contenders in 2017 as Team Envy, I remember being impressed by how focused and prepared Aaron had the FNRGFE team we faced in the playoffs. We’re excited to bring his mentality, track record of winning, and the cerebral way in which he approaches the game to the Dallas Fuel.”

The contract with Aero demonstrates a showing of faith for Dallas Fuel, something some have found lacking in the past. When the team parted ways with coach KyKy in mid-April, many were critical of the team for trying to rush results. After all, under KyKy, the Dallas Fuel had performed better than they had previously. But with Aero under a contract extending to the end of Season 2, the Fuel have indicated that they are willing to invest in some long term team building.

It is rather fortuitous timing for Aero as well. Although he wasn’t leading Fusion to their victory, his departure came one week before the playoff matches, and their victory continues to show positively on him. It may even have helped him find a better deal with the Dallas Fuel. The only other question is why Fusion, sitting only three positions above the Fuel at 8th, weren’t interested in swapping Aero to their primary team.

Fusion University was gracious when Aero announced his departure, thanking him for his commitment and congratulating him on his next ventures. However, it’s worth wondering if Fusion won’t hold the slightest of grudges for the man that led them to an undefeated season and then joined a competitor.

We’ll just have to wait and see how Fusion handles playing against their former member when they battle the new Dallas Fuel later this year. We’ll also be watching closely to see if Aero can bring the Fuel through the ranks quicker than KyKy did. If the Fuel don’t rise fast enough, Aero may be see his head coaching position in the big league’s cut rather short.
