Imagine Dragons Gets Into Esports

ReKTGlobal has announced that Imagine Dragons have joined Steve Aoki to become investing partners within the company. According to their site, ReKTGlobal is an esports infrastructure company, one whose goal is to “bridge the gap between the multi-billion-dollar business of traditional sports and the burgeoning business of esports and competitive gaming.” In addition to investing in the company, Steve Aoki and two members of Imagine Dragons, Wayne Sermon and Daniel Platzman, are now co-owners of the esports team Rogue.

While Aoki’s involvement in esports has been limited mostly to his involvement with Rogue, Imagine Dragons also have history with League of Legends and even performed at their Worlds tournament. In 2014, Imagine Dragons worked with Riot to create Warriors, the song and video that accompanied Worlds 2014. The video, as of today, has been viewed over 133 million times. The manager for Imagine Dragons, Mac Reynolds, spoke on their interest in esports.

“We love gaming and esports and have been looking for new ways to contribute to this community for a long time – but we never found the right fit until now.”

While Imagine Dragons previous involvement was with League of Legends, their new team, Rogue, is far more heavily invested into shooters. Rogue has teams operating in CS:GO, Rainbow Six Siege, H1Z1, PUBG, and Rocket League.

The new funding and attention from Imagine Dragons may help to revitalize a team that has recently performed below expectation. In Rocket League, Rogue finished 5th of 8 teams. In CS:GO, Rogue did even worse, sitting at 28th of 30 teams. However, their Rainbow Six Siege team is doing quite well, having recently won the playoffs in a 2-1 match-up against the Evil Geniuses.

For Aoki, this is just business as usual. As a huge presence in the EDM music scene, Aoki’s transition into gaming was fairly simply. Based out of Las Vegas, it was also easy for him to join up with the Vegas based Rogue. Since then, he has helped promote the team in small ways.

What the team-up shows, more than anything, is that esports are a much more open field than traditional sports. Instead of being headed up largely by billionaire businessmen, young entertainers and entrepreneurs are becoming huge parts of the esports scene. It isn’t certain exactly what ways this will pave for the future, but crossovers like Imagine Dragons 2014 Warriors video will almost certainly be a prominent element in the future.
