This Weeks Headlines
Tatsumi Kimishima, Nintendo’s President since the death of Satoru Iwata in 2015, is stepping down to allow younger leadership to help propel Nintendo into the future. Kimishima, who just turned 68 last week, lead Nintendo out of a tumultuous time with the Wii U and into the new era of the Switch.
Replacing the much beloved Iwata was no small task, but Kimishima excelled during his time at the helm. Taking over for him will be Shuntaro Furukawa, who’s been with Nintendo for over two decades.
The console war between Sega and Nintendo is getting a sequel, this time on a smaller scale. The Mega Drive Mini is Sega’s response to Nintendo’s SNES Classic.
In honor of the 30th anniversary of the original Mega Drive console, or the Sega Genesis as it was called in North America, Sega has announced its plans to release the Mega Mini Drive, a pewee sized console based on the original. As of this writing, there’s no news on what games will be available for the Mega Mini Drive, but knowing Sega, it will probably have at least one Sonic game on it.
YouTube is once again in the hot seat for targeting creators. The war against demonetization has been waging for over a year, but even as creators lose viewers and money, and even after nearly 30% of YouTube’s audience left in protest, YouTube has not let up. The video site’s newest move once again targets smaller creators, but this time comes in an unexpected form. Instead of going after streamers themselves, they are forcing Multi-Channel Networks to do it.
Quantic Dream, the developer behind next month’s hotly anticipated Detroit: Become Human, is suing two french media outlets over an exposé that ran earlier this year. According to the reports, Quantic Dream was harboring a destructive work environment where homophobia, sexism and overall malevolency was able to run rampant.
Guillaume de Fondaumière, co-CEO of Quantic, has vehemently denied these allegations, telling Kotaku in January that he planned on taking “all possible legal actions to defend my honor.”

The Coolest Thing Out There, This Week
Following rapidly on the heels of the Netherlands Loot Box ruling, Belgium has now joined the crusade. This time, Overwatch and CS:GO are in trouble, with Fifa 18 now facing backlash from two EU countries. Unlike the Netherlands, Belgium’s biggest issue is with the deceptive marketing practices. Koen Geens, the Minister of Justice who commissioned the investigation, spoke about why Loot Boxes in particular must be regulated.
“We have already taken numerous measures to protect both minors and adults against the influence of gambling advertising. That is why we must also ensure that children and adults are not confronted with games of chance when they are looking for fun in video games,” he said.
