Ohio University Offers Fortnite Scholarship
Ohio’s Ashland University is offering a first-of-its-kind scholarship to exceptional Fortnite players. The scholarship will be awarded to players who make it onto the schools esports team, which will begin holding tryouts this fall.
Up to $4,000 will be given to recipients of the Fortnite scholarship, with the exact sum being determined based on player skill level and academic requirements.
Ashland University’s esports head coach, Josh Buchanan, has said that “The growth of Fortnite has been astounding to witness and getting players into structured practices ahead of the launch of a collegiate league will be extremely beneficial to our program.”
One interesting thing that Buchanan eludes to in his quote, is the fact that an official Fortnite esports league, collegiate or otherwise, doesn’t actually exist yet. The game has seen tremendous amounts of success in a relatively short amount of time, but there have been few structured events and there’s no ‘league’ to speak of.
Of course, Ninja did just break even more streaming records with his latest tournament stream, so there’s clearly a massive potential audience for Fortnite as an esport. It seems only a matter of time before Epic or someone else creates an official Fortnite esports league.
“We’re excited to provide this platform for gamers who want to showcase their skills in a more competitive space.”
— Josh Buchana
This is the first time an American university will offering a Fortnite scholarship, but it’s far from the first time an esports scholarship will be available to students.
The collegiate esports scene has been growing steadily for the past few years. Ashland already offers potential scholarships for players of League of Legends, Dota 2, Rocket League and more; while other schools around the country are offering all sorts of esport and gaming related financial opportunities. The University of California, Irvine has even created an official esports arena to house its growing collegiate esports program.
You can find out more about college esports scholarships here and you can register for Ashland specifically on the schools website.
