Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Might Not Have A Single-Player Campaign
According to a recent report from Polygon, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 might forgo a traditional single-player campaign for a stronger focus on Zombies and multiplayer modes. Activision refuses to comment on this latest development, but based on previous Call of Duty games, it doesn’t seem all that unlikely.
The Call of Duty series has been thriving off of Zombies and multiplayer for years now. The single-player campaign has felt like more of an afterthought for at least the last few installments.
According to anonymous sources, the lack of a single-player campaign might be a result of Treyarch being unable to finish it before the games release this fall. If that is the case, there’s a possibility they could try to include it later on as a DLC. Although, that would probably result in the biggest PR nightmare the gaming world has ever seen, so it seems rather unlikely.
While you’re immediate reaction to this Black Ops 4 news might be to roll your eyes or scoff, does the game really even need a campaign? When was the last time someone bought a Call of Duty title for the single-player campaign?
The franchise might receive mediocre reviews year in and year out, but it’s routinely the best-selling game of the year. The millions of people who buy Call of Duty games do it for the multiplayer and Zombies.
Black Ops 4’s campaign was never going to win any awards. People were never going to lavish it with praise and call it the greatest thing in gaming for 2018. Even for people who like Call of Duty, the campaign would probably have been an afterthought as soon as they finished it.
It feels weird to say, but Treyarch and Activision cutting the single-player campaign in favor of stronger Zombies and multiplayer is probably in the best interest of everyone. A horrible unfinished campaign might dampen even a really good multiplayer and Zombies. A nonexistent campaign is something that people will probably just forget about and move on from.
Luckily, we won’t have to wait until E3 to find out more about Black Ops 4. Activision recently announced a community reveal event for May 17.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has a release date of October 12, 2018.
