Courtesy of the Japanese magazine Famitsu, fans of Dark Souls now get a look at what the Remastered game will look like. The screens don’t show much, but it does look noticeably better than its predecessor. Sen’s Fortress, for one, looks more obviously rusted and aged, but that might be the effect of the lighting, or it might just be us misremembering because we were busy trying not to roll off the catwalk.
When the announcement of a remaster came along, many fans were boisterous, hoping that a remaster might add additional content to an already jam-packed game. For many fans, like the streamer Xenosum – who just completed a world first Soul Level 1, No damage run – the content of the original Dark Souls might finally be reaching its peak. However, remasters very rarely add anything new to titles. A remaster is often merely a graphical upgrade, and in some cases, a very minor one. Even looking at the screens above, it’s hard to tell how much different Sen’s Fortress really looks from one taken of the original title, or if they haven’t just ‘enhanced’ the photo a bit.

This image from the original Dark Souls doesn’t look too far off from the new one.
Despite the possible non-changes coming from the Dark Souls Remastered edition, fans are still excited. For one, on May 25th, From Software will be releasing a deluxe trilogy box. At almost $500, the box will include all three games – including the remaster – soundtracks for the games, an Oscar of Astora bookend, as well as an Item Dictionary, which will make catching up on the lore vastly easier. While this has only been announced for Japan thus far, if sales and interest are high enough, America might be looking at a chance for this as well.
However, more than new swag, what many are excited for with the remaster is a release across all platforms: the PC, PS4, Xbox, and Switch. The reason for this isn’t just that people have a bizarre desire to try and master Dark Souls with a Switch controller, but more to do with experiencing the game as it was intended to be played.
A huge part of the Dark Souls experience across all three games is being able to engage in Jolly Cooperation or to invade other players. While the remaster may not offer any gameplay changes, and while the graphical updates might be minimal, fans are most excited to experience the game once more the way it was intended to be – with tons of other players helping out for tough bosses or coming to murder you while you try to survive Sen’s Fortress.
Regardless of how the graphics turn out, we can expect the internet to be filled with ‘Git Gud’ following the Dark Souls: Remastered release on May 25th.
