Darksider’s Documentary: “I’m Just Gonna Make the Game I Wanna Play”
It has been eight years since the release of Darksiders, an ambitious game created by a small studio and headed up by Joe Maduireira, a man that earned his fame in fantasy comics. In that time, the studio behind the game released a second game, Darksiders II, went under, was bought out, and has now resurfaced with much of the original team to work on Darksiders III and bring the series back to life. And now, Gameumentary is producing a documentary about how a dream stayed alive for over 10 years.
The gaming industry is full of failure, but usually those failures fall away and go unnoticed. Some are much more obvious, as with Lawbreakers, which had huge amounts of hype before crashing and burning upon launch. The story of Darksiders is more nuanced though.
While neither Darksiders or Darksiders II released to huge success, they were both well-liked and well-made games. They were created by Vigil Studios, a small company created by Joe Maduiereira and which operated under the umbrella of the much larger THQ. However, the story behind the Darksiders games is more about two opposing worlds. The team of Darksiders was dedicated to a passion project, something that Joe Mad (as he is known to fans) is all too familiar with. Joe Mad’s reecent project, Battle Chasers: Nightwar was one created from his own ideas about traditional RPGs, and Darksiders had a similar passion behind it. The only problem was that the financial minds at THQ were going in a much different direction.
It’s obvious from the first game that the team envisioned Darksiders as a long sprawling story which could go on for many years, especially with the cliffhanger ending that seemed to promise at least four more games in the series. But the motivation of the team and their dream was at odds with reality of their parent company, which was spending money too thriftily and trying to create too many titles.
Needless to say, it is exciting to get an inside look into the real details behind Darksiders and how the team managed to keep a passion project alive for over a decade, through two games, bankruptcy, being bought out, and a final revival with Darksiders III. And just maybe we’ll hear more about what went into their new release, Darksiders III.
The full documentary releases on March 27. Darksiders III is expected to get a release date later this year.
