NA LCS Week 3 Recap – Cloud9 Rising Up

We knew week 3 would be a shake-up, and it did not disappoint. While Echo Fox enjoyed their undefeated record for two weeks, week three saw them suffering their first loss from an unlikely opponent. Following that loss, Cloud9 and Team Liquid quickly climbed to tie with Fox, showing that first place spot isn’t as easy as Rick Fox may have thought.

Darshan vs Huni

Darshan had some choice words for Huni after winning a 1v1. It went along the lines of “Yeah! F**** You!”

The biggest news is that the mighty Echo Fox fell to CLG in the most unexpected way. After CLG lost Aphromoo, many questioned if they could pull it together, but last week, Darshan said the weakest link in Fox was Huni, and that if he could take him down, the rest of Fox would fall, and that’s exactly what happened. Darshan beat out Huni in the top lane and led his team to CLG’s second win and then into their third win against Fly Quest.

Following on CLG’s heels, TSM has been showing they aren’t out yet either. They delivered a solid defeat to the front-runners 100 Thieves after Hauntzer and Bjergsen dragged the rest of their team to a win. Mithy and Zven are still woefully behind, and Mithy’s missed ults on Orne haven’t done much to shore up confidence in his abilities, but the core of TSM in Hauntzer and Bjergsen have shown an ability to carry their team that might just last long enough for the bot lane to get caught up to TSM’s playstyle.

Meanwhile, Cloud9 might just be the strongest team in NA as they show time and again that their map control is second to none. Though Clutch Gaming and OpTic Gaming both put up solid fights against C9, neither team could handle the perfect coordination and control of objectives and both fell quickly behind and stayed there. However, Team Liquid is tied with them, and while their map control isn’t quite as solid, their bottom lane in Doublelift and Olleh has shown that it can steam roll nearly any team.

jayce defeat

Some teams have been spending a little too much time on the grey screen.

Unfortunately, CLG and TSM were the only teams that really popped this weekend. Clutch and OpTic continue to play well but to be outplayed despite both having stars in the mid-lane. That leaves just Fly Quest and Golden Guardians left, neither of which are showing much promise.

Fly Quest has eked out some surprising victories, but not by showing any real sense of synergy or battle plan. And in last place, still without a single win, is Golden Guardians. After recently replacing their coach, the Guardian’s owners may have thought they would be looking at a different outcome, but the fact remains that GGS never had a strong roster. Unlike Clutch and OpTic, who at least have one or two power house names, the Guardians have little to offer and less to show. Without some impressive changes in either roster or strategy, it seems unlikely either team will climb much higher.
