100Thieves Fire Player kNg for Homophobic Remarks
Following on the tail of homophobic remarks marring the OWL’s competitive scene, CS:GO has had to face a similar incident with one of its players. Long time CS:GO player, kNg, respected as one of the best players around, was recently fired before ever even playing a game, and all over an insult that started on twitter.
One week ago, SK Gaming player FalleN sent out a tweet complaining about the loud partying in a room next door as he was trying to sleep before a match. The popular interviewer and esports personality Thorin then took a jab at 100 Thieves to say, “ELEAGUE gave you 100T’s rooms by mistake.”
It was an innocent enough comment spurred on by a reputation largely built by kNg of partying hard. In fact, while playing for Immortals, kNg and two of his teammates showed up late to their match at Dreamhack Montreal because they had been partying the night before. The tardiness not only cost their team the match, but it was hugely disrespectful to both the organization and their opponent (and embarrassing for their owners).
So Thorin’s remark, while a definite poke at kNg, wasn’t at all unfounded. However, kNg is known for overreacting, and his reaction to Thorin wasn’t exactly as witty or pointed a jab as Thorin had done. He responded with:
“Those shit you’re talking about, are you sober? Or is it just after you make love to your boyfriend?”
Terrible grammar aside, it wasn’t a very thought out response from kNg, but unlike the incident with Overwatch, this was far from kNg’s first brush with inappropriate remarks online. In response to the tournament that kNg showed up late to, opposing team Counter Logic Gaming called out kNg and his team, stating they heard from several sources that Immortals had “[spent] the night partying.” This quickly caught fire across twitter, and kNg didn’t take it too well, responding to one of his accusers, Mehta, with “You’ll prove it or I’ll kill you.”
KNg’s death threat earned him a suspension that eventually turned into his firing from Immortals. It was only through his raw skills at CS:GO that he was allowed onto 100 Thieves. However, he was also partially responsible for 100 Thieves forfeiting their first official match due to visa complications. It was just a short time after kNg’s response to Thorin went viral that 100 Thieves officially released him from service – aka, fired his ass.
While it’s certainly possible kNg could find his way to another team with his skills, it’s likely any team he goes to will be similarly embroiled in scandal, making him a very unappealing purchase for any team.
