The new Nintendo Labo is weird, kind of cool and a total surprise. In other words, it’s exactly what we should have expected from Nintendo.

The Labo is pretty hard to explain, so you should probably watch the video above to get a real idea of the cardboard device’s purpose. If you’ve already watched the video and are still scratching your head, you’re not alone. While Microsoft and Sony are dealing with juvenile things like VR and 4K technology, Nintendo is ushering in a new era of gaming with their innovative new cardboard. 

I know what you’re thinking. Will the Labo come in a cardboard box and if it does, how do you know where the Labo starts and the packaging ends? Unfortunately, we don’t have those details just yet. What we can tell you, is that the Labo will make its debut in the United States and Japan on April 20th. Two variations of the cardboard contraptions will be available at that time. The Variety Kit will sell for $69.99 and the Robot Kit will be $79.99.

The Labo Variety Kit comes with enough cardboard to create six different ‘Toy-Cons’ (the clever moniker Nintendo is using for the cardboard creations). The kit includes cutouts for a fishing rod, a house, a motorbike, a piano and two RC cars. For ten dollars more, the Robot Kit will help you create a robot exoskeleton that you actually wear. 

The response to Nintendo’s Labo can be pretty well summed up in the gif above. You either think it’s a stupid pointless waste of the Switch, or you think it’s the kind of intuitive out of the box thinking that only Nintendo could come up with.

In reality, the Labo will take a lot of imagination to actually enjoy, and that’s why it’s very clearly geared towards kids. The fact that it’s relatively cheap (but also really expensive considering it’s just cardboard) makes it so that it’s not the end of the world when the RC car or piano inevitably get stepped on or dropped or what have you.

Is the Labo a revolutionary step forward for gaming? No. Definitely not. But it is something that kids will likely have fun with, for a while at least.
