Reliving 2013: EA Still The Worst Company in America
Reliving 2013: EA Still The Worst Company in America
Four years ago, EA was voted the Worst Company in America for the second straight year. Now here we are, nearly half a decade later, and they still haven’t changed.
For nine years, a site called the Consumerist (now part of the Consumer Reports brand) gave out the “Golden Poo” award to the one company that made it through their Worst Company gauntlet. The competition pitted 32 horrible companies against each other in an March Madness-style bracket.
Past winners included Halliburton, BP, Comcast and BofA, but EA stands alone as the only company to have won the award in back-to-back to years.
After their first ‘win’ in 2012, EA mocked the site, claiming that they would ignore the title and “continue making award-winning games and services played by more than 300 million people worldwide.” 2013 rolled around and the gaming company won the award for a second time, beating out Bank of America for the top spot once again.
EA took their second “Golden Poo” much more seriously, vowing that they’d work harder to maintain their “player-first” mantra.
Then 2014 came (the last year of the Consumerist’s Worst Company award coincidentally) and it was just a terrible year for gaming as a whole. Widely regarded as among the worst years in gaming history, EA managed to blend in with the crowd and people stopped pitting the blame solely on their shoulders.
Now here we are, half a decade since their first Worst Company award and EA still sucks. They suck so bad that just last month their comment became the most downvoted thing in Reddit history by a factor of five; 673,000+ downvotes for suggesting that their latest cash grab was actually a way to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Though Bungie is giving them a run for their money, it’s clear that EA is still the worst company in gaming. The good news is, they already know how to better themselves. All they have to do is change to a player-first mindset, just like EA’s chief competition officer Peter Moore said four years ago.
Unfortunately, that was four years ago and Moore has long since left his position. There’s just no reason to believe that EA will actually change, and it’s a shame considering all the great properties they have under their belt.
