Spencer on Xbox One X and Microsoft Plans for a Game Streaming Service
The One X is finally here and Xbox chief Phil Spencer marked it’s arrival by announcing Microsoft’s intent to move towards software and services.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Spencer declared that he and his team need to grow as content and service providers. “Our ability to go create content has to be one of our strengths. We haven’t always invested at the same level. We’ve gone through ups and downs in the investment.”
The timing of such a remark might seem odd, but it’s actually good news for Xbox owners. Spencer’s quote confirms that it’s pretty unlikely we’ll see a new Xbox console in the next few years. That means Xbox One X owners don’t need to worry about their brand new hardware being out of date anytime soon. As for One S owners, by the time you need to upgrade, the One X (and probably 4K TVs) will likely be significantly less expensive.
Beyond that, this fundamental shift means Xbox owners should have even more games to enjoy in the coming years.
For this generation of consoles, Xbox has been the clear loser in regards to exclusives. The Switch and PS4 have had a plethora of exclusive titles and Xbox has been left in the dust.
That being said, Spencer’s talk of a focus on software might not exactly translate to an increase in exclusive titles. He’s gone on the record many times as being opposed to exclusivity in gaming. Instead, that focus shift could result in things like a gaming streaming service and developing console games for other platforms, such as mobile.
According to Spencer via Bloomberg, “Microsoft will probably debut a streaming service that doesn’t require a console for some types of content in the next three years.”
Overall, what Microsoft and Spencer seem to be doing is focusing on gaming as a whole, rather than just Xbox owners. From their push for cross-platform play and purchase of unique games like Minecraft to their Xbox Play Anywhere campaign, Microsoft is doing their best to transform the gaming landscape into a singular ecosystem.
