This Weeks Headlines

After a pretty hot summer, October’s free games for Xbox and PlayStation owners might feel like a bit of a let down, with one major exception. Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain is the big marquee game for PlayStation Plus this month. If you haven’t played it, it’s one of the best game’s of the last decade and as close to a must-play as you get, especially when it’s free. Gone Home is the big game for Xbox Gold members in October, but it hardly matches up to Phantom Pain or last month’s main Gold game, Forza Motorsport 5.

You can see all of this month’s free console games here.

Don’t hold your breath in hopes for a new PlayStation Vita anytime soon. Though rumors of a possible Vita 2 have been swirling around for years, Sony’s gaming chief Andrew House recently crushed all hope for a new handheld from Sony.

In an interview with Bloomberg, House said that “there was not a huge demand” for the Vita outside of Japan and Asia. He blames a lifestyle change towards smartphones as the key reason for the disinterest in handhelds.

Vivendi has been trying to force a hostile takeover of Ubisoft ever since last year. For anyone who is a fan of Far Cry, Assassins Creed, Rayman, or the upcoming Southpark game, Fractured but Whole, this is something to pay attention to. Generally, when a company performs a hostile takeover, things aren’t great for the company that is being taken over. Morale is low, many people are often fired or quit and there’s a generally rough transition period. For an industry that already struggles with deadlines and time frames (many AAA titles take upwards of five years to complete), this could make a slow process even slower. If Vivendi succeeds in their takeover, gamers could be in for a rude awakening.

Skyrim’s special edition is being released across every major system, and with it, Bethesda is hoping to add enticing new content. The most recent entry is Survival Mode – an option that primarily adds weather and hunger hazards to the game. The only problem is that this has existed in varying forms for over five years through community modding and nexusmods.

The special Edition is priced around $30, and for that price, we expect a lot of new content, or a lot of revamping of existing content. However, a number of mods already exist that do much of what this $30 edition do. Frostfall and Realistic needs and diseases could handle much if not all of the survival elements of the game. Meanwhile, there are dozens of mods for graphics, so any of the improvements Bethesda has done have already been done by their community.

Indie Spotlight

The Death of Xbox Live Indie Games

It’s been two years since Microsoft announced the death of Xbox Live Indie Games and the day is finally here. Today, September 29th, 2017, is the end of XBLIG. The marketplace was pretty groundbreaking for consoles and the current Indie landscape owes a a tip pf the hat to XBLIG. It wasn’t the best Indie marketplace and it certainly wasn’t the last, but it helped pave the way for Indie games to reach mainstream audiences.

It’s death won’t effect many of us directly, but it’s existence made a definitive difference in the gaming industry. XBLIG was part of a larger movement towards the acceptance of indie games. It helped create the culture that accepted games like Limbo and Firewatch with open arms. For that, we say thank you XBLIG; thanks for everything.

The Coolest Thing on the Internet This Week

There isn’t much to say here. A new Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer dropped and we’re stoked. The game is officially a prequel to the original and as a launch window of “Spring 2018.” The main character’s name is Aurthur Morgan and his role isn’t entirely clear. He seems to be the gang’s enforcer of sorts. Though the game technically occurs in a fictional world, it seems to closely resemble the Gulf Coast and Louisiana in particular (especially if that leaked map from a year ago can be trusted).

Finally, there’s no sign of John Marston in the new trailer. So far, there’s no telling whether or not he’ll be a part of RDR 2 or if it’ll be an entirely unrelated tale. Either way, we can’t wait to get our hands on this game.
