Doublelift Determined to Play Finals After Tragedy

Steve Arhancet, the CEO and owner of Team Liquid, has announced that Doublelift – commonly called Peter – will be playing the finals in Miami this weekend.

Support for Doubelift in his time of grief has been huge. Fans, esports personalities, and streamers have all shared their condolences and love with Doubelift. His old and current team have been his strongest supporters, with TSM members and faculty reminding Doublelift that he will always have a home with them. This is something far more unique to esports than any professional sport.

Because esports are still in their infancy, and because of how tight-knit the communities are, many involved have known each other for years. A recent 100 Thieves video shows that in 2013, Nadeshot, head coach Prolly, and four out of the five players of 100 Thieves all competed at MLG Dallas in 2013. The relationship between teams and players is built on a foundation of familiarity, one that has become a core part of League of Legends. However, a tragedy like this has never befallen a player before, and it will make for a defining moment in the esport.

In traditional sports, pro athletes have often had to play through personal grief, letting the game become a source of strength in their time of need. Pat Neshek, of the Oakland A’s, played just days after the death of his newborn son. Joannie Rochette competed in figure skating in the 2010 Winter Olympics, competing days after losing her mother to a heart attack. Volleyball player Hugh McCutcheon missed three games of the Olympics after his parents were mortally wounded in a stabbing but returned to finish the competition and win gold.

While no one would blame Doublelift for his personal decisions in the matter, it shows how seriously these players take the game and how important it is to them. It also puts a lid on naysayers like Keith Olbermann, who on Twitter this year called Doublelift a “snotty rando kid playing children’s games” in response to an article Doublelift had written.

Doublelift proves once and for all this weekend that he is a professional esport athlete, and he has more character, dedication, and integrity in one moment than Olbermann has mustered in his entire career. It will be a moment that goes down in esports history, remembered forever.
