Twitch Is Laying off People, Dealing with a Bot Problem and Fending of Racist Rhetoric
Twitch Is Laying off People, Dealing with a Bot Problem and Fending of Racist Rhetoric
It’s been a busy couple days for Twitch. First, it was revealed that they laid off several employees (including at least one high-profile one) in a bid to reprioritize other departments. At the same time, people were asking if their most popular streamer, Ninja, would be suspended for using a racial slur.
Then Twitch streamer/host Kevin Pereira admitted that he had used view-botting to inflate his show’s viewership and subsequently deleted his shows account when he was found out. And now, they’ve suspended a popular streamer for using racist and derogatory language, after not suspending Ninja for a somewhat similar offence.

The layoffs from Twitch are the least troubling news from all of this. The company didn’t make it clear exactly how many people lost their jobs, but certain employees took to Twitter and revealed that it was a significant amount, however many that is.
One person that we know for certain lost his job is Justin Wong, former VP of community and social at Twitch. He relayed a lengthy message on Twitter, stating that he loved Twitch and believes that it “is still filled with some of the smartest, most passionate people” he’s ever worked with.
According to the company, the layoffs were not due to anything bad, but were instead a result of Twitch reprioritizing for the future. A spokesperson for the company said that they planned on increasing their headcount by approximately 30 percent by the end of the year.
Then there’s Ninja. The current gold standard of streaming slipped up last week when he used a racial slur while rapping during a stream with Nadeshot. Plenty of accounts have been banned for using language that is disparaging, racist or otherwise in violation of Twitch’s terms of use.
As such, a lot of the community was waiting patiently to see if Twitch would hand a suspension to their most popular streamer. In the end, he wasn’t and Twitch said it was because they always consider context and intent before dealing any discipline. Evidently, they deemed Ninja’s behavior excusable given the circumstances.
That was the end of that, kind of. Because over the weekend, Matthew “Sadokist” Trivett was suspended by Twitch for using racially and generally disparaging language. Sadokist’s language was far more charged than Ninja’s and the subsequent threats he made, telling fellow CS:GO streamer Don Haci to “Maybe put a belt around your neck and jump off a cliff,” more than warranted a suspension.
While Twitch probably handled both the Ninja and Sadokist ordeals the best they could, it’s still a pretty bad look for the streaming service. Having two popular streamers drop the n-word and more doesn’t paint Twitch in the best light.
Then, to top it all off, the bot problem that’s been plaguing Twitch for a while now resurfaced. The Attack!’s Kevin Pereira revealed that he used view-botting to try and inflate his stream numbers. Pereira then deleted all of The Attack!’s accounts, including it’s Twitch and Patreon accounts.
To be fair, it’s not like The Attack! was a large part of Twitch, but Pereira admitting to using view-botting is just a reminder of another darkside of the platform.
In other words, the PR department at Twitch has probably been working overtime lately.
