Nintendo News: Ramped up SNES Classic Production and Super Mario Odyssey Nintendo Direct

Nintendo has high hopes for this holiday season. It’ll be the first for the Switch and given the unfortunate numbers for the Wii U over the past several years, Nintendo is surely gunning for some stellar sales numbers. Perhaps that’s why they’ve been holding so many Nintendo Direct events as of late, including a recently announced one for this Wednesday at 3 pm PT.But the Switch is only part of the holiday sales equation.

Pre-orders for the SNES Classic went live just a few weeks ago and sold out fast. This lead many to assume the worst, that the SNES Classic would be just as hard to get a hold of as the NES Classic was last year.

Last year was a nightmare for anyone who wanted to get their hands on Nintendo’s first retro console. It sold out almost immediately, there weren’t enough manufactured in the first place and the ones that were available were going for hundreds of dollars or more on Ebay and other such sites. This year, Nintendo hopes to remedy at least one of those problems with the SNES Classic.

Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, told the Financial Times that SNES’s production has been “dramatically increased,” adding that he “would strongly urge you not to over-bid on an SNES Classic on any of the auction sites.” Of course, there’s still no telling how many units that “dramatic increase” actually correlates to.

On the bright side, the retro console is slated to arrive on  Sept. 29, so we won’t have to wait long to find out.

The other big news coming out of Nintendo this week is the announcement of yet another Nintendo Direct event. This one will take place this Wednesday at 3 pm PT and will focus on “what’s headed to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS over the next few months, including new details about Super Mario Odyssey.” The event is slated for 45 minutes and will be streamed on both Twitch and Nintendo’s website
