Trivia Extension comes to Twitch through SLIVER.tv
Twitch has been building their network of extensions for some time. The first steps were building a library of extensions for streamers, then it was making the extensions mobile, and then it was adding bit integration. The next phase is partnerships to create new content, which is where SLIVER.tv comes in.
Sliver’s newest extension is called Tilted Trivia. It works by aggregating information from games being streamed as well as some information about the streamer’s themselves. Viewers opt into the extension by using bits – which also serves as revenue for the streamer – and are able to play each game. Every round happens live as the streamer is playing and is designed to be a secondary function to the stream (like most extensions). Players will have 10 seconds to answer a question about the game or the streamer, with bonus points being awarded for answering quickly. Anyone who answers incorrectly will lose the round and be out of that game. The game will also feature leaderboards and over 3000 curated and created questions
While Tilted Trivia is being offered to any streamer that wants to use it, it seems one of the biggest uses could be for esports. Esports have downtime – whether it is waiting between matches or a pause in the game – and extensions are the solution to this. Normal sports like baseball have half-time or the seventh inning stretch. Esports will have games like Tilted Trivia. For now, at least, this extension looks like it requires Bits to play, fortunately, a single bit is equivalent to about a penny.
SLIVER.tv’s original purpose was to serve as a “platform to record, view and stream top eSports games in VR video.” Since their creation, however, the company has expanded into many different roles. Their website features its own currency, trading for loot boxes, items, and skins, and their partnership with Twitch is just one of many efforts to become a major force in esports.
For esports, Sliver represents just a small push towards making viewing more interactive and community based. While Tilted Trivia is just one example of the kinds of extensions an esport like Overwatch could use, it will hardly be the last. This is especially true for major titles like Fortnite, who already have a partnership with Twitch and who are making a huge push into esports
