Blizzard has announced the seventh expansion in the ongoing epic that is World of Warcraft. The trailer shows off new races, new battlegrounds, new maps, and a hint of the story to come. After nearly 17 years, it’s clear that Blizzard is trying to keep things fresh, which may account for the film-trailer vibe that the newest trailer rather strongly sticks to.

Unlike previous expansions, the focus of Battle for Azeroth is firmly in the roots of Warcraft, with the Horde and Alliance and their war being the focal point of the expansion. As can be expected, this comes with lots of new battles, cool siege mechanics, new towns, and new battlegrounds. Most of the older expansions have focused on the uniting of the two factions with the hub town of every expansion being a place for Horde and Alliance alike to visit and quest in. Though unrest has always been portrayed in this expansions, the war between the two factions has been put aside for the better part of a decade.

The expansion is also unveiling Allied Races, which aren’t quite new races. The addition of races has always been a contentious one, and rumors have often circulated about Murlocks, Gnolls, and even Nagas as becoming playable, but Blizzard has scaled back on new races. Allied Races are instead different factions of established races with minor physical differences. Highmountain Tauren, Lightforged Draenei, Nightborne, and Void Elves are the newest factions, with players having an option of questing to unlock these variants or preordering to get them early.

Both factions also get new maps. The Horde’s new map is the troll inspired Zandalar, and for the Alliance, Kul Tiras. These news maps will also offer up the ability to ally with the Zandalari trolls and the Dark Iron Dwarves respectively. This expansion also kicks off a level cap of 120, up 10 from the previous expansion.

Battle for Azeroth has been given a release date of August 14, 2018 with three editions currently available.

Standard Edition – $49.99

Collector’s Edition – $99.99 with bonuses from Digital Deluxe, a Two sided emblem, soundtrack, and two World of Warcraft novellas.
