Followed by a helping of “The Best Thing on the Internet, This Week.” And finally, we gather up all the week’s headlines and smash them into a TL;DR pie for you to enjoy.
This Weeks Headlines
Late Saturday night, the League of Legends community was rocked by devastating news from Yiliang “Doublelift” Peng. Over the course of the weekend, Doublelift revealed that a terrible tragedy befell his family Saturday night. In an apparent act of grief, his brother attacked their parents, mortally wounding his mother and sending his father to the hospital. The viciousness of the attack has sent a shockwave through everyone from fans to players, especially considering what a vocal and leading figure Doublelift is within League of Legends. However, while the news is devastating, the support that has flooded Doubelift has been nothing short of amazing.
Niantic may have exploded into the mobile market, but after the first year, it has been mostly downhill for them. Their player count has dwindled considerably – by more than 90% – and players continue to be unhappy with recent updates which ignore many of the larger complaints about the game. This all came to a head last year when Niantic hosted a Pokemon Go Fest in Chicago. Unfortunately, the Fest was a complete failure. Players had constant connectivity issues thanks to poor cell service and the game crashed frequently, to the point where attempting to catch the rare spawns at the location was an exercise in frustration and little more. As a result, many attendees sued and now Niantic is going to pay.
Loot boxes are not a popular feature in the gaming community and they’ve even been accused of being a form of illegal gambling. The loot box mechanic has been a nuisance for many years, but now it feels like game developers are starting to take notice of the overwhelming backlash.
Recently, developer Monolith Productions announced that they would be removing the loot box system from Middle-earth: Shadow of War. The loot boxes, or War Chests as they’re called them, along with the Gold currency and the market will be officially removed from Shadow of War on July 17, via a free update. If a player still has any Gold that they haven’t spent by this date, it will be converted to items.

It may be difficult for esports fans to take mobile games serious, but Clash Royale isn’t kidding about getting into esports. While Clash Royale tournaments have had fairly good success in the past, recent news means that even huge North American esports organizations are starting to get involved. Cloud9, Team SoloMid, and Counter Logic Gaming have all hopped on the mobile gaming train to compete for a $1 million prize.
The Coolest Thing Out There, This Week
Spyro, Smash and Crash
Last week, we found out that Super Smash Bros. for the Switch is finally coming out. Last year, we got a wonderful remaster of Crash Bandicoot via the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. Now, we’re getting a Spyro remaster later this year. It’s like the 90s decided that 2017/18 sucked so much that we needed a ton of nostalgia just to help us get through it. And frankly, that sounds just fine to me.
Just check out how amazing the new Spyro looks compared to the old one in the gif above. Get ready for a whole new generation to obsess over a mini-dragon who’s only mediocre at flying (but whom we love anyway).
The Spyro Reignited Trilogy will be making its way to the PS4 and Xbox One on September 21.
