Loot boxes are not a popular feature in the gaming community and they’ve even been accused of being a form of illegal gambling. The loot box mechanic has been a nuisance for many years, but now it feels like game developers are starting to take notice of the overwhelming backlash.

Recently, developer Monolith Productions announced that they would be removing the loot box system from Middle-earth: Shadow of War. The loot boxes, or War Chests as they’re called them, along with the Gold currency and the market will be officially removed from Shadow of War on July 17, via a free update. If a player still has any Gold that they haven’t spent by this date, it will be converted to items.

Shadow of War received positive reception from critics when it was first released last year, but there was still vocal criticism regarding the game’s loot box mechanic. The reason for the loot boxes’ removal was explained in a blog post on the game’s official website. Apparently, Monolith Productions had “been listening to [player] feedback,” and the developer felt that the loot box system was getting in the way of the game’s immersion and, “undermining the heart of [the] game.”

Over the last few years several members of government  and authority figures from around word have accused loot boxes of being a form of illegal gambling and loot box mechanics may be facing an uphill legal battle in the future. Even if loot boxes are still legal, gamers are starting to become more than a little wary of them.

Hopefully the removal of loot boxes from Middle-earth: Shadow of War is a sign that developers will think twice before including loot boxes and microtransactions in future video games.
