Mobile Game Clash Royale Signs Major Esports Teams

It may be difficult for esports fans to take mobile games serious, but Clash Royale isn’t kidding about getting into esports. While Clash Royale tournaments have had fairly good success in the past, recent news means that even huge North American esports organizations are starting to get involved. Cloud9, Team SoloMid, and Counter Logic Gaming have all hopped on the mobile gaming train to compete for a $1 million prize.

Attracting the attention of these three is a big deal. The three teams represent the most well-known names across North American esports. Combined, they cover nine of the biggest esports, including League of Legends, Rocket League, CS:GO, Overwatch, Hearthstone,Fortnite and PUBG. All three organizations have also had numerous teams compete on the international stage, making them more than comfortable with Clash Royale’s upcoming World Finals. However, Clash Royale hasn’t succeeded yet.

This is especially true because Supercell, the company behind Clash Royale, reported its lowest earnings in three years in 2017. This is a remarkably similar story to another mobile game giant, Rovio. Rovio is the company behind the Angry Birds franchise, and one which preceded and failed at much of what Supercell is attempting. Both companies created hugely successful mobile games, both have been struggling to stay relevant in recent years, both grew their teams recently, and both have had their eyes on esports. The only difference is that Rovio had to shrink their team following a projection shortfall that has put them in dire straits. It is telling, though, that both mobile games have looked towards esports as the next logical answer to financial woes. In the case of Supercell, this may have more to do with Tencent, the mega corporation which holds a controlling equity in Supercell.

Tencent is a massive investment group that has its hands in virtually every major gaming company. They outright own Riot, but they also have huge shares in Epic Games and Blizzard as well as have a publishing deal with PUBG. The point being, Tencent sees big things in gaming, but especially in mobile and esports.

Whatever the cause, Supercell is investing heavily into Clash Royale as an esport, but the esports table is filling up mighty fast, and no one knows yet if mobile gaming has the mass appeal and draw that will bring fans in by the millions to see it play out.
