Pokémon Go has come a long ways since those first days of everyone running around excitedly chucking Pokéballs at anything that moved. The hysteria over the game has dissipated, but it’s now a much better game than it was over a year ago.

From quests and enhancements to the gym battle system, to a plethora of new Pokémon, the game has grown tremendously from what it once was. That trend continues with Pokémon Go’s latest update. The game’s research update that goes live later this week brings something that fans have been asking for since the beginning, a kind of story mode.

The in-game research tasks that are assigned by Professor Willow will take players on a storied adventure that can lead to rewards and possible encounters with legendary Pokémon.

According to the The Pokémon Go team,

“There are two different types of research you can contribute to: Field Research and Special Research. Gather Field Research tasks by spinning nearby PokéStops, which will give you objectives that include discovering and catching certain Pokémon or engaging with battles, among other things. Special Research may be requested by Professor Willow himself, and will take you on a journey to make important discoveries!”

The purpose of the research tasks is to investigate the mysterious happenings in the world that might be “connected to the Mythical Pokémon Mew,” at least that’s Professor Willow’s theory.

There’s no word yet on exactly what the research tasks will entail, but they better be something substantive. Players have been waiting for a story update like this for quite some time and if the story and research prove to be too mundane and thoughtless, that might not bode well for Pokémon Go. 

The real kicker for this whole update is the introduction of Mew to the Pokémon Go universe. For anyone who was around during the original Pokémon craze back in the late 90s, you’ll know that Mew was central to the original Pokémon movie, aptly named Pokémon: The First Movie. More than that, Mew has always been shrouded in mystery more than any other Pokémon.  

From glitches and cheats, to trying to figure out how to lift that damn truck that Mew was surely stuck under, players have been trying to figure out how to capture the little pink Pokémon since the days of Red and Blue. That’s why capturing Mew in Pokémon Go, if you’ll even be able to, should be a nearly impossible task. It should be something that takes a whole lot of time, energy and cunning. Players need to be at least as dedicated to the task of finding Mew as Jesse, James and Meowth were to capturing Pikachu, anything less would be a disservice.

The research update will be released on Pokémon Go sometime later this week.
