Geralt Confirmed for SoulCalibur 6

CD Projekt Red may have moved on from Rivia, but that doesn’t mean that Geralt is going anywhere. Like a retired athlete making the late show rounds, Geralt is still being trumped out for fans to enjoy. We can expect to see peeks of Geralt in Gwent, the Witcher card game that is coming out later this year. But alongside the card game, we can also expect Geralt to join Ivy, Nightmare, and the other regulars for SoulCalibur VI.

So far, Geralt looks remarkably similar to his likeness in Witcher 3. His attacks are fast, flowing, and can easily be comboed into his signs. While he will most certainly be balanced differently to fit into a fighting game roster, he still looks similar enough that veterans of the previous Witcher games will be able to transition into his new style.

Like Final Fantasy XV, the Witcher III may be over, but that doesn’t mean CD Projekt Red is done with its titular hero. It was announced last year that Noctis would be joining the Tekken 7 lineup, so it appears that fighting games may be going in a direction more Dissidia inspired than by traditional fighting games like Street Fighter. While there is little thematic logic in the crossovers, fans of the series probably won’t be complaining much, and fans of fighting games are used to stories not quite making sense or adding up, so it all sort of evens out in the end.

Crossovers have been done many times in the past with fighting games and especially with Soul Calibur. They famously released a different hero for every version of SoulCalubr II back in 2002. This featured Heihachi for the Playstation, Spawn for the Xbox, and Link for the Gamecube. While it could be seen as a sign of fighting against the relatively poor reception of newer fighting games like Street Fighter VI and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, it could also just be business as usual for the world of SoulCalibur.

In fact, Geralt’s appearance in SoulCalibur perhaps makes less sense for CD Projekt Red, who have at times said that fans have seen the last of Geralt and then immediately walked back these statements. It’s even uncertain if Geralt is gone for good from his own universe.

Back during the development of the Witcher III, Studio Head Adam Badowski concretely put the Witcher to rest.

“People may ask if this is really going to be the last Witcher game. Yes, it is. Why? Because we believe that we should end the series on a high note.”

Since then, the company has said a number of different things about the series and world. Only three months after Badowski put Geralt to rest, CEO Adam Kicinski walked back these statements (possibly because the game had come out to huge and insane success in that time).

“This is the last part of the trilogy, in which there will be a great finale of the story. However, this doesn’t mean the end of franchise,”

Since then, Kicinski and others have made a myriad of statements that indicate that yes, they actually are interested in a Witcher 4, but not for a long time, and maybe not with Geralt. Then again, they’ve said before we wouldn’t ever get another Witcher game. Now, Geralt is starring in a fighting game and a card game, so it’s a bit hard to know who to trust, which is ironically exactly like the Witcher series.

Regardless, fans can reconnect with Geralt later this year when Soul Calibur VI is released.
