Super Smash Bros. for the Switch and More From the March Nintendo Direct

Super Smash Bros. is coming to the Switch, finally. Smash has grown into one of Nintendo’s marquee console games and we’ve been waiting on bated breath for any sign that it was making it’s way to the Switch. After a year of anticipation, Nintendo finally delivered with a short teaser at the very end of this week’s Direct event.

There’s no official title yet, but we do know the game is slated for a 2018 release. Beyond that, not much was revealed in the roughly 30 second teaser.

There are a couple morsels we can pull from the trailer above. First of all, it’s pretty obvious that we’ll see at least one member of the Splatoon family joining the fighting game. It also looks like this will be an entirely new game, rather than a remaster of the last. Although it’s hard to say for certain, it sure looks like the Link at the end of the trailer is the Breath of the Wild Link.

It’s been a while since the last Smash game and a remaster or port both feel like cop-outs at this point. So far, Nintendo really hasn’t disappointed us even once with the Switch and we’re holding out hope that they’ll keep that streak alive with this one.

The Super Smash Bros. announcement only took up a small fraction of the Nintendo Direct event. There was plenty more on the table including Splatoon, Crash Bandicoot and Mario Tennis news. You can see the entire event and a few of our favorite announcements below.

Smash is back and so is Crash. Following a highly successful run on the PS4 last year, the N’Sane Trilogy is making its way to the Switch and it’s not alone. Undertale and Okami HD will each be recieving Switch ports as well. And if that weren’t enough, Ubisoft is also bringing South Park: The Fractured But Whole to Nintendo on April 24.

Rapid fire time:

Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition launches on the Switch on May 18, an awesome Solaire of Astora is launching alongside Dark Souls Remastered and WarioWare is back on the 3DS starting August 3.

If that all weren’t enough, Splatoon 2 is getting a new story DLC called “Octo,” Mario Tennis Aces is coming to the Switch on the June 22 and Luigi’s Mansion is heading to the 3DS. Also, Detective Pikachu pre-orders are now live, ahead of the games March 23 release date and a Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker port will be arriving on the Switch on July 13.

You can see all of the announcements from today’s Direct broken down by subject on Nintendo’s website
