Shanghai Dragons Part Ways With Coach Chen Congshan

by | Mar 6, 2018 | Esports, Esports section, Videogames

The Shanghai Dragons and their coach, Chen Congshan, are officially parting ways. The team made the announcement on their Twitter page and added that assistant coach Sun Jun Young would be taking his place on an at least temporary basis.

The news comes on the heels of yet another disappointing weekend for the squad. They are officially the only team in the Overwatch League who have yet to win a match. They’re easily the worst team in OWL and they’ve put up one of the worst seasons we’ve ever seen in professional esports.

Luckily, the team isn’t just sitting back and waiting to lose. The firing of coach Chen Congshan is just the latest attempt the Dragons have made to get their season back on track.

The team’s biggest move, and arguably the biggest move made by any OWL team this season, came just a couple weeks ago when the Dragon’s decided to sign Kim “Geguri” Se-Yeon. Geguri is one of the best Overwatch players on the planet and she’s also the first woman to sign with any OWL team. She mains Zarya and is so good, that people actually thought she was cheating when she first arrived on the scene.

Geguri wasn’t the only new player to join the Dragons last month. They’ve also recently added He “Sky” Junjian, Lee “Fearless” Eui-Seok, and Chon “Ado” Gi-Hyeon. Unfortunately, Geguri and the rest of the new team members have yet to actually play a match for the Dragons due to a series of visa issues.

The Dragons are playing for the future, and that’s a big deal for both them as a franchise and for the Overwatch League as a whole. It isn’t always about the here and now in sports. What makes leagues and teams sustainable is long-term thinking. OWL’s whole business model is based around traditional sports and this roster shuffling and coaching change has traditional sports written all over it.

It isn’t clear when Geguri, Sky, Fearless and Ado will be able to join the team, but when they do, it’ll surely make a difference (they can’t make things any worse at least).

Sun Jun Young is slated to take over full head coach responsibilities after a week of transition from Chen Congshan. The Dragons haven’t said whether or not they’ll be looking at Young to take over the role on a permanent basis or if his position will be purely interim. However, given the big moves already made by the team, don’t be surprised if the Dragons look outside of the organization for a permanent replacement.

The Shanghai Dragon’s next match is tomorrow when they face off against the second place Seoul Dynasty.
