Darksiders 3 Gameplay Trailer Revealed

THQ Nordic has been quiet on Darksiders 3, the third installment of what was setup to be a huge series before the original studio closed down. Days ago, THQ finally revealed what some of the combat would look like, showcasing a variety of attacks out of the main character as well as an impressive dodging system. It isn’t known yet if dodging in the game will be more like previous installments involving invincibility frames or if it will be more hit box focused as many games have been headed towards. But, judging by the way Fury flips over hammer swings in the newest trailer, it’s probably the latter.

Darksiders 3 doesn’t so much as pick up where the previous games left off as continue the saga. The first game featured a plot to blame the apocalypse on War, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Unlike most games, the apocalypse came about, and the game takes place during the ruin of the Earth as it is overrun by hordes of demons and the angels that battle them. Darksiders 2 took a slightly different approach with players controlling Death on a quest to prove War’s innocence. Like the previous game, Darksiders 3 will take place alongside the events of the first game, explaining why the other horsemen are preoccupied and unable to aid their brother.

While War battled a general of hell in the first game, and Death took on a creature of Chaos and entropy in the second, Fury is on a mission to stop the Seven Deadly Sins. Gameplay wise, Darksiders 3 looks much closer to the second game than the first. Many of the climbing pillars that appeared in Darksiders 2 can be seen in the new gameplay trailer. Additionally, Fury seems much more manic and fast-paced, more like Death than War’s fighting style. It’s likely the game will be a blend of hack-n-slash and platform/puzzler.

Darksiders 3 Maker

The game also looks like it will return to story elements touched at in previous titles. Makers, the hugely bulky race from the previous two games, can be seen in some of the images, hinting that the team behind Darksiders 3 have no plans of deviating from the established world. Even the enemies in Darksiders 3, from the skeletons in hell to the lumbering imps on earth, are pulled straight from the previous titles, and look like revamped versions of their previous incarnations.

While the Darksiders series never met with widespread success, among those that played it, it was nearly peerless, a blend of engaging story and characters, masterful voice acting, and unique art from the famous comic artist Joe Madureira. This newest installment gives hope that the long-arcing story may someday be finished. With only one horsemen left after Fury, the success of Darksiders 3 will go a long way towards deciding whether or not this is the series’ last chance or a rebirth.
