The Highs and Lows of The Game Awards

by | Dec 8, 2017 | News, News Section, Videogames

Last night was The Game Awards and we were covering the event in person for the first time. It was a night full of laughs, surprises and a couple eye rolls.

You can find a full list of winners on The Game Awards website, but were here to give you the highs and lows of the night as a whole. We’re leaving out some of the more obvious highs (Zelda, Cuphead and a lot of the incredible trailers) and focusing on some of the most memorable aspects of the night, from a developers profanity-laden rant to the cocktails they were serving before the show.

High: The Game Awards Orchestra

The Game Awards Orchestra was awesome, especially their performances to open and close the night. While the whole ensemble was incredible, the woman playing the cello (double bass? Whatever that cool white stand-up violin thing is called) stole the show. In fact, the most disappointing thing about the Orchestra was the fact that they only got to perform three times over the course of the nearly four hour show

Low: Overwatch

Overwatch is a fine game, but it certainly didn’t deserve to win Best Ongoing Game and Best Esport. And it definitely didn’t deserve to win both of those awards and have a tribute video dedicated to it. The fact that neither LoL nor WoW were up for Best Ongoing Game was a tragedy. Also, Overwatch is barely an esport, it’s inaugural NA season literally just started its preseason this week. We know Blizzard is throwing ridiculous amounts of money at the game and advertising for it, but still.

High: Josef Fares’ Bizarre Rant

In a night full of memorable moments, this one stood out as the one people will be talking about for years to come.

Low: The EA Battlefront II Commercial

Here’s something you probably didn’t know, unless you were at the show last night. During one commercial break, a Battlefront II commercial played inside the massive auditorium. As soon as it came on, most of the audience started talking shit and more than a few people started booing. The showing of the trailer and EA’s presence was a low, but the audience reaction was definitely a high. As was Zachary Levi’s hilarious quip about microtransactions.

High: Blood Orange Cocktails

They had blood orange cocktails and margaritas in the lobby before the show and they were delicious. They also had champagne and treats in the VIP area, but we were kicked out of there before we had a chance to try any of those. That’s a story for another time though.

High/Low: FromSoftware

This was a tease at its most powerful. A simple seconds long clip with only three words and the name of developer, and it was enough to be one of the most exciting things of the night. It’s a high for that reason. It’s a low because, c’mon, give us a little more. We’re dying here.

High: The  Death Stranding Trailer

The new Death Stranding trailer felt like the night’s big ticket item. It was nearly 8 minutes long and left the majority of us feeling more confused than anything else. From the weird thumbs up the baby in Norman Reedus’ stomach gave us, to the crazy creatures that were invisible (kind of?), the trailer has us more excited than ever. Plus, the bromance between Reedus and Kojima is awesome. #Kodus? #Reedima

High: VR and Indie

VR and Indie games were out in force at The Game Awards. From the In the Valley of Gods to Vacation Simulator, we’re more than a little excited for the future of gaming.

High: The Game Awards

Overall, we were pleasantly surprised with the show. It’s evolved a lot in the past four years and it’s nice to see the gaming industry have an awards show that feels like more than just a PR grab. Though it might not be as big as the Academy Awards, The Game Awards felt like something for gamers, by gamers. Geoff Keighley is a kind of awkward host, most of the award recipients were a little odd and awkward themselves, and it all just felt very genuine. Here’s to hoping that next year’s show builds on the positive momentum of The Game Awards 2017.
