Fast Travel, A Weekly Gaming Recap – December 8th Edition

by | Dec 8, 2017 | News, News Section, Videogames

Each week, Fast Travel helps you get caught up on everything going on in the gaming industry. We start by highlighting a few of the week’s biggest news pieces. Then it’s on to a little dollop of indie news. Followed by a helping of “The Best Thing on the Internet, This Week.” And finally, we gather up all the week’s headlines and smash them into a TL;DR pie for you to enjoy.

This Weeks Headlines

It was a big week for Blizzard as Overwatch dominated the headlines. The preseason of the inaugural Overwatch League got underway on Wednesday. The good news is that the teams seem pretty evenly matched overall and most of the matches so far have been exciting and somewhat unpredictable.

Then at The Game Awards on Thursday night, Overwatch took home two coveted awards, Best Esport and Best Ongoing Game. They were up against some stiff competition in Dota, LoL, GTA Online and others, but  managed to sneak away with the two pieces of hardware a year after they won the coveted title of Game of the Year.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild took home three big awards on Thursday night, Game of the Year, Best Game Direction and Best Action/Adventure Game. Nintendo also announced that the next DLC for the game, “The Champions’ Ballad,” would be debuting shortly after the show ended. Oh, and beating the new DLC unlocks a dirtbike for Link to ride around Hyrule in.

Needless to say, fans were pretty stoked to hear the news and Breath of the Wild was clearly the night’s big winner

In a recent blog post, The Steam Team announced that, “As of today, Steam will no longer support Bitcoin as a payment method on our platform due to high fees and volatility in the value of Bitcoin.”

When Steam first adopted the cryptocurrency, fees were as low as 20 cents. They’ve been as high as $20 recently. Those numbers are even more startling when you consider the fact that other cryptocurrencies offer transaction fees that are just a fraction of that.

The nearly eight minute long Death Stranding trailer was one of the definitive highlights of this year’s Game Awards. It left us confused and more than a little eager, but it wasn’t the only big trailer of the night. The phrase “Shadows Die Twice” and a seconds long clip were all the information we got on a new FromSoftware title. Bayonetta 3 and Soulcalibur 6 were each announced with tantalizing trailers. A new game from the creators of Firewatch was revealed, as was Witchfire, a new title from the creators of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

We got our first footage of the new PUBG desert map too. And we couldn’t have PUBG news without Fortnite news, so Epic revealed their new 50 vs 50 mode.

Instead of one standout piece of mind-blowing news, the night was filled with a slow wave of world premiers and revelations.

Indie Spotlight

This weeks news was pretty heavily focused on Thursday night’s Game Awards and the indie-sphere was no exception. Indie titles thrived at the show and it’s no surprise that Cuphead stood out from the crowd. The game was up for five awards and won three: Best Art Direction, Best Independent Game and Best Debut Indie Game.

It wasn’t just about the awards though. Ten years ago, an indie studio could have only dreamed about having their game share the spotlight with AAA studios. These days, indie titles are often as hotly anticipated as anything else. In the Valley of Gods was one of the most exciting trailers to debut at The Game Awards and it’s an indie game. Each year we see the indie genre growing more and more and this year’s Game Awards was a pretty good indicator that 2018 will be indie’s biggest year yet.

The Best Thing on the Internet, This Week

The EA Hate Train Arrives at the North Pole

The EA hate train lost a little bit of steam early in the week, but by the time Wednesday and Thursday rolled around things began to ramp up again. First came this hilarious Secret Santa gift. And don’t worry, it looks like whoever the gift giver was just printed off the cover and didn’t actually buy the game (it says “Available Now” on the cover).

Then came Zachary Levi’s hilarious microtransactions quip at The Game Awards. Plus, most of the audience booed and/or talked shit while a commercial played for Battlefront II.

We don’t know when the EA hate train will come to a halt, but it’s safe to say it won’t be until at least after the holidays.
