Pokemon GO Thrives a Year and a Half After Launch
Pokémon GO, the game that most of us forgot about over a year ago, still has a thriving and engaged community of players that’s catching literally billions of Pokémon.
After the initial month or two, most of game’s enormous fan base abandoned the game. At its zenith, over 30 million players logged on to play Pokémon GO daily. That number now sits at five million. Although an 80 percent decrease might seem like a death sentence, you have to first understand that 30 million is an extremely impressive number that shattered expectations for the game. It made Pokémon GO one of the most popular mobile games of all time and was a worldwide phenomenon.
On top of that, five million is still extremely high for a user base that’s a year and a half old> What’s even more impressive is the game’s other numbers.
Pokémon GO has roughly 65 million monthly users and has raked in well over a billion dollars in revenue. With over 750 million downloads, the game has been played by about 1 in 10 people on the planet.
Perhaps most incredible is the number of Pokémon that were captured in this year’s Global Catch Challenge.
The stakes were revealed at the onset. Trainers had just under a week to catch 3 billion Pokémon. If they could do that, the regional exclusive Pokémon Farfetch’d would be unlocked globally for a limited time. When all was said and done, over 3.36 billion Pokémon were caught and we were all reminded of just how popular the game still is.

Despite its current success, the future of Pokémon GO is unclear. The game’s experienced some minor overhauls and the Global Catch Challenge certainly captured the fans’ attention, but longevity is certainly something on Niantic’s, and players, minds. There’s still a lot more that the community desires and each update seems to bring just as much disappointment as it does satisfaction.
That being said, Niantic might only be partially invested in the game’s long-term future.
The company recently raised over $200 million and the majority of that is likely for the upcoming Harry Potter GO, or Harry Potter: Wizards Unite as it’s to be officially titled. And if there’s a fan base more ravenous than Pokémon, it might be Potterheads.
Pokémon GO is heading in the right direction and although it’s user base is dwindling, the game is arguably better than its ever been. The big question is, how much more time and energy will Niantic put into Pokémon GO after Harry Potter: Wizards Unite debuts sometime next year?
