Starting on November 14th, StarCraft II will become free-to-play. The announcement was made during the opening conference of this year’s BlizzCon, Blizzard’s annual celebration of all things them.

The announcement came from CEO Mike Morhaime and was quickly followed by a Tweet from the game’s main account. The Tweet confirmed the news and offered additional insight via a short promotional video. 

Beginning in less than two weeks, the Wings of Liberty campaign will be free-to-play for anyone who doesn’t already own it. For those who’ve already purchased Wings of Liberty, the Heart of the Swarm campaign will be available for free instead.

Select online versus modes will be free as well starting November 14. The Unranked and Versus AI modes will be immediately made free with Ranked mode becoming free after users complete ten ‘first wins of the day’ in Unranked or Versus AI. According to Blizzard, the restrictions on Ranked were made in order to ensure the integrity and competitiveness of ranked matches, similar to how LoL only allows those level 30 and above to compete in ranked matches. 

There’s more coming free as well. Commanders Kerrigan, Raynor, and Artanis will be completely free with all other Commanders being free up to level 5. Other campaigns, commanders and various extras will still be available for purchase in the online store.
