The Switch Continues to Run Into Memory Issues
The Switch is most likely going to be the most successful Nintendo system ever sold. Boasting a new Mario and Zelda game in the year of its launch has helped cement that. But for all the praise the Switch has been getting – and it has been getting lots – the relatively weak next gen system has seen lots of limitations. As Nintendo pushes for the Switch to get more and more content, they have realized that the Switch can’t store most of it, and LA Noire is just the latest game that can’t fit onto the console.
At just 32GB, the Switch pales in comparison to the 500GB available on Playstation 4. This isn’t a judgment of the platform, but it is a severe limitation. Nintendo has already announced that numerous titles far exceed this capacity, meaning users will either have to buy additional memory or settle for the physical copies. However, even the physical copies of games will require updates and patches. LA Noire’s required patch takes up a whopping 14GB, leaving little room on the Switch for anything else.
For Nintendo, who boasted so much about inclusivity, it seems a poor decision to try and include as many games as possible when even games six years old are too large to run on the Switch. To make matters worse, if gamers wanted to purchase enough memory to make the Switch comparable to the Playstation 4, it is going to cost them an extra $200. Considering the fact that the Playstation 4 is over four years old and selling at the same cost as the Switch, this seems completely backwards.
Nintendo has always struggled with memory and internal capacity – the Wii and DS have had issues as well – but the hidden costs that get tacked onto their consoles is something that goes somewhat against the perception many have of Nintendo’s friendly exterior. While they continue to load the Switch with games that are increasingly beyond its capabilities, they are essentially hiding them behind a paywall. So, while the Switch will undoubtedly have more content than its predecessors, if gamers are required to pay extra for that content compared to other systems, it hardly seems worth the purchase. Judging by Nintendo’s past track record with these issues, they probably won’t do much to alleviate this problem either.
