Fortnite: Battle Royale Hits 800,000 Concurrent Players
The battle royale genre is only speeding up as the year’s end gets closer, and Fortnite is burning up the track. While PUBG is still the reigning champ, Fortnite: Battle Royale is getting ever closer. Today marks their passing the 800k concurrent player mark, and that is concurrent users after only being out for a single month.
For most games, these are pretty unheard of numbers, but a healthy dose of massive Twitch coverage and engagement as well as highly addictive gameplay has turned battle royales into the premier game genre. Like MOBAs years before, there are major contenders popping up, and as the popularity grows, there are almost certainly numerous other companies with plans to build their own games of varying similarity to what is out there, but what everyone is really looking at is if any of the current top games will knock one of the others out of the standings.

While the three big dogs in the game – H1Z1, PUBG, and Fortnite – could feasibly find a way to co-exist, the reality is that they probably won’t. Of the dozen or more MOBAs that came to the surface, only three remain in the spotlight – League of Legends, Dota 2, and Heroes of the Storm – while the others have all faded. It’s for this reason that PUBG has had so many complaints about Fortnite, but there is little they can do.
It has taken Fortnite a single month to reach concurrent users in Battle Royale of 800k. It took PUBG five months to do the same. Granted, Fornite has technically been out since July, which some could argue means Fortnite only beat PUBG by a single month. However, the meteoric rise of Fortnite has started and continued since their introduction of Battle Royale.
But the real showdown between these titans is going to come in 2018. Despite both titles having near record-breaking numbers and growth, neither are technically released. Players are currently enjoying the early-access for both titles, which makes their numbers all the more impressive. Come next year, both companies are going to be very careful when they launch, and just how polished the game is.
Already, Steam is starting to swarm with negative reviews for the often buggy and clunky PUBG. While the game’s popularity hasn’t been affected much by this, when it comes to consoles, it very much will matter. And in that regard, the developer behind Fortnite, Epic Games, has far more experience. At the end of the day, it will simply be the better experience that wins, and both games should be taking a careful look at one another to see just who has the edge.
