Scalpers Conspire with Worlds 2017 Ticket Seller

Getting tickets to the semi-finals or finals of League of Legends Worlds tournament has always been difficult. The 2017 Worlds has been doubly difficult with two Chinese teams having made it into the semi-finals, but even with all of that said, there is some extremely shady business going on with the tickets to the final two events, and it is starting to look like the official ticket seller is to blame.

Reports from China say that as of two days ago, the international tickets for the event went on sale through en.damai.cn at 10:00AM PST and were sold out in the span of a single second. While most would simply have to give up on attendance, in China, it merely means that buyers have to turn to scalpers, who have marked the tickets up by an insane degree, reportedly raising some ticket prices from $75 up to $950.

Anyone familiar with Blizzcon or PAX might simply assume that Worlds 2017 shares a similar degree of popularity, but Tencent, the owners of Riot and organizer for Worlds 2017, announced through social media that a number of tickets had run into issues and were being revoked so that they could be released again. If this wasn’t all suspicious enough, scalpers are also selling tickets to VIP booths despite the tickets being unobtainable through public sales, and therefore seemingly impossible for scalpers to have already acquired.

It is only made worse by the fact that Tencent chose to work with Damai.cn, an organization which Chinese natives have said is notoriously untrustworthy and which most call “Huangnio.cn”, which roughly translates to the scalpers’ site. Only worsening matters, Damai.cn sent a legal letter to the scalper’s supposed company to address concerns, but when fans accessed the public location of Damai.cn, they found out that they shared the same address as the scalpers, essentially sending a letter to their own office. Since then, China’s online anti-fraud center has begun an investigation and started to gather evidence – most of which has been contributed by fans and Redditors.

While Damai has announced that they will revoke all scalper tickets over the course of the next five days, that does little to help any fans hoping to attend the semi-finals. Also, after such a serious bungling, it’s likely that many international and local fans who would otherwise have gotten tickets will not be able to.
