Xbox One’s Backwards Compatibility Now Includes Original Xbox Games

Backwards compatibility on the Xbox One is about to get better than ever. Starting on October 24, the newest generation of Xbox consoles will be able to play original Xbox games.

Microsoft first announced the new backwards compatibility feature at this year’s E3, but few expected it to be implemented before the end of the year, let alone before November.

Of course, not all original Xbox games will be backwards compatible. To start with only 13 will be, but those 13 are full of gems. Among the most notable on the list are Star Wars: Knights of the Old RepublicNinja Gaiden Black and Bloodrayne 2, three games that would easily make it onto any ‘Best of’ list for original Xbox games. The other games on the list are Black, Crimson Skies, Dead to Rights, Fuzion Frenzy, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Neowave: The King of Fighters, Pirates!, Prince of Persia, Psychonauts and Red Faction II.

The Xbox One might not have many current-gen exclusives to its name, but this list certainly boosts its overall exclusive list. Not to mention, the Xbox one is the only current-gen console that even has backwards compatibly, so that’s another plus.

The 13 original Xbox games will be available to download in digital format starting tomorrow (a couple have already popped up in the marketplace, but you won’t be able to play them until tomorrow, even if you download them today), but you’ll also be able to play old discs if you still have them.

The other good news is that all the newly backwards compatible games “will look better on the Xbox One family of devices, taking advantage of the power of Xbox One with up to 4X the pixel count on Xbox One and Xbox One S, and up to 16X the pixel count on Xbox One X.”

The list of games will undoubtedly grow, but down expect a torrent of titles. The selection is supposedly being carefully curated by Microsoft, meaning it’s more likely to be a small drizzle of games, with the trade off being that they should be some of the best and most memorable.
