What Is the Ataribox?
The new Ataribox is a lot of things, but ugly isn’t one of them. We’ll talk about the technicalities in a second, but before your mind gets tainted by all that, just take a minute to appreciate the look of the device. Both the wood-laden retro one and the Vader-esque black one are minimalistic beauties that would look good in just about any situation.
And now that we have that out of the way, let’s get down to business. The Ataribox is still mostly a mystery. We know that it will play old games, but also potentially some new ones. It isn’t totally a retro-box like Nintendo’s SNES Classic, but it certainly doesn’t seem like it’ll be up to snuff with the Switch, Xbox One or PS4.
Also of note, the Ataribox will be crowdfunded on Indiegogo. Crowdfunding such a project is a pretty big risk, especially for a company like Atari. If the campaign is successful, great. But if it is only middling, that could foreshadow a seriously tumultuous future for the new platform. Plus it makes you think, why does a company like Atari need to turn to crowdfunding? Is it purely for promotion and social engagement, or is it because they couldn’t find any sizable investors that believed in them? Either way, the Indiegogo campaign is expected to launch this fall.
Another piece of troubling news is the price of the device. In an email sent out to subscribers, Atari announced that the price would be between $249 and $299. That’s triple the price of the NES Classic and essentially the same as base models of the Switch, PS4 or Xbox One.
As far as the guts of the machine go, there isn’t a whole lot we know. It’ll run on a custom version of Linux and be “powered an AMD customized processor, with Radeon Graphics technology.” That leaves a lot to the imagination. The Ataribox could turn out to be nothing more than a microconsole or it could surprise us all and be closer in specs to something like the Switch, though it’s hard to imagine it packing enough power to really compete with any of the big three.
Ultimately, we’ll just have to wait patiently for more information. Wait and hope that at some point, Atari reveals something that’ll justify the box’s steep price point. For now, at least we can enjoy looking at the box.
