PS4 5.0 Firmware Is Now Live
PS4 5.0 Firmware Is Now Live
After nearly two months of beta testing, firmware version 5.0 is finally making its debut on the PS4. The update isn’t revolutionary by any means, but it institutes a number of changes that users have been clamoring for since at least the last major update.
First up is a cure for one of the most annoying aspects of using the PS4 as a multimedia device. With the new update, users can now disable pop-up notifications while watching movies and TV. The fact that you couldn’t do that until now is pretty mind boggling.
5.0 also introduces a new feature called Team Tournaments. This new functionality allows you to join up to 60 different teams who you can then participate in official Team Tournaments with. The feature is only available in games whose developers have integrated it though. Luckily, when Team Tournaments launches on Thursday, it’ll already have four games supporting it: Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, World of Tanks and Mantis Burn Racing.
The new update will also allow users to begin following anyone they want in the What’s New feed. Before you were limited to verified accounts or those who were in your friends list. Now you’ll be able to follow any public account you want. The update also allows for higher quality streaming from your PS4, meaning that Twitch streams should be looking better than ever.
On top of a few sizable changes, 5.0 also rolls out a slew of minor enhancements. New system languages have been added, the tournaments bracket viewer has been updated, there have been a bunch of small additions made to the Quick Menu, messages and more. Plus, there’s a whole new system called “Family on PlayStation Network” that completely changes the way parental settings work.
