New PSVR Model Announced by Sony
A new model of Sony’s PSVR was announced today and it’s got a few welcome changes in store for users.
There are a lot of small things that make using the PSVR on a regular basis a bit of a hassle. The biggest of which was the whole HDR debacle. Luckily, the new model of PlayStation’s virtual reality headset has “an updated Processor Unit that supports HDR pass through, enabling users to enjoy HDR-compatible PS4 content on a TV without having to disconnect the Processor Unit in between the TV and the PS4 system.”
Unfortunately for current PSVR owners, you can’t just switch out the processor in your old model for the new one. Meaning that your year-old machine is already outdated, a fact that will surely irk many early adopters.
The new version of PSVR, model number CUH-ZVR2, also features a big upgrade in the audio department. According to Sony, the updated design “enables the stereo headphone cables to be integrated with the VR headset and a slimmer, streamlined connection cable.” This means an overall cleaner look and hopefully a smaller chance at those cables snagging on things.
More good news is that the pricing will remain the same for the new model.
A new model of PSVR has been expected ever since Sony announced new bundles and a price drop last month. There isn’t an official release date set for CUH-ZVR2, but we’d expect it to be sometime soon given that we’re fast approaching the holiday season. It’s possible that we’ll get a look at the headset at Paris Games Week in November and that it’ll go on sale shortly thereafter.
The packaging for the new model will be slightly different. Sony says that “the product image on the packaging will be updated to show changes on the new model, like the integrated headphones on the VR headset.”
As you’d expect, both the new and old model will be fully compatible with all PSVR games.
