Call of Duty: WWII Beta Has over 20,000 Negative Reviews

by | Oct 2, 2017 | News, News Section, Videogames

The Call of Duty WWII Open Beta has been active for less than a week and already amassed over 28,000 Steam reviews. The bad news is they are overwhelmingly, crushingly negative. With the exception of the graphics, which most fans enjoy or find standard, nearly everything else about the game has been heavily criticized.

This is a problem for a series that is already heavily criticized. Call of Duty has become an Activision staple, with a new game being churned out nearly every single year and being one of the most consistent revenue streams for Activision. However, this has caused many fans to revolt as the games feel static, unoriginal, and copy-and-pasted from old editions. If that were all that were wrong with Call of Duty WWII, that would probably be fine, but that is just the beginning of what fans hate about the new Call of Duty.

Unlike previous criticisms, which are usually more more franchise targeted, the vast majority of criticisms focused on the actual gameplay of Call of Duty WWII. One of the biggest complaints was in the weapons. Though the game seems to boast a far amount – twelve primary weapons and seven secondary weapons – the biggest complaint was how useless many of them ultimately were. SMGs or the STG 44 rifle were largely all anyone used (unless they were sniping), and the balance of the weapons seemed remarkably off.

The experience was made worse by maps which felt unnecessarily convoluted, confusing, and poorly designed. This was in addition to nearly instant spawn timer, constant crashes, poor optimization, poor balancing, historical inaccuracies – such as the removal of the swastika and inclusion of genders and races on sides that didn’t have them – and most importantly, hackers.

Despite the game just being released, it has been almost completely overrun by hackers. Users have complained about spawning into the game only to immediately be shot through walls or have one enemy kill every member of their team within moments of appearing on the battlefield.

Though it’s possible that Activision could work to shore up the security issues for the game’s November release, it’s unlikely many of the balance issues with the game will be addressed in such a short period. But Call of Duty games have a way of defying odds and doing well despite any criticisms or shortcoming leveled against them. We will just have to wait and see if this happens once more.
