Philadelphia Fusion Contenders Get Jerseys Banned From Overwatch League

The Overwatch League has already set a precedent as being a zero tolerance kind of organization in terms of harassment, but that has now extended into quasi-offensive slang as well. Philadelphia Fusion’s new jerseys for the contender team sported a giant FU in honor of Fusion University. Contender teams are essentially the minor leagues of OWL, and while they do play in brackets and finals, they are more a proving ground than anything else. Unfortunately, the OWL found that this was a bit too tongue and cheek and ordered the players into black shirts.

Despite not being able to sport their new (and mostly humorous) jerseys, the Fusion cruised to victory against first OpTic Academy and then Toronto to win the finals. Fusion has been taking it all in stride though. The jerseys are currently on sale and being promoted as the ‘banned shirts.’ The CFO of Fusion, Joe Marsh, even took the opportunity to mock what was a pretty silly ruling in the first place.

While it’s possible someone could take offense to the FU’s emblazoned on the team’s chests, that could likely be said of anything. As a contender team, it also seems like a good place for players to have more fun and joke with one another, especially considering the high school and college age of all the players.

While the OWL has done an admirable job thus far of keeping its League clean and respectful, it also needs to remember to keep it fun. What could have been a fun tradition among the contenders, maybe even leading to back and forth between the teams, was instead killed right out the gate. Considering that Contenders bring in only a fraction of the views that the normal League does, it also seems harmless to let them be a bit different.

This also further cements Blizzard’s reputation as a company that is a too harsh and strict with its tournaments, something that hasn’t helped the competitive scene to grow. Either way, the jerseys have been bid farewell. Blizzard hasn’t made a statement about the banning of the jerseys, but it is likely the ruling will stick.a
