Atomic Heart Looks Like Fun Madness, But Where’s The Story?
Atomic Heart is an “adventure first-person shooter” set in Soviet Russia. But instead of the depressing and politically corrupt Russia of today, Atomic Heart is a fun Chernobyl and Fallout like world. However, the developer behind the game, Mundfish, has released precious little about Atomic Heart. The player will control an operative sent in to investigate an experiment gone awry. Mundfish recently dropped their first trailer, but it answers few, if any questions. While the trailer certainly looks fun and beautiful, it’s hard to see what else there is to the game besides graphics and guns.
Atomic Heart looks like Bioshock and Fallout’s Russian lovechild, and it also looks like it might not make a damn bit of sense. As a secret agent infiltrating an unknown Russian location, the trailer shows you discovering violent robots that spew bombs, fly, and even switch faces to become nightmarish clowns. But the Russian wasteland also comes replete with floating, twisting tubes of water, bodies made entirely of hovering blood, snow tunnels in the sky, and a variety of weapons from wrenches to hammers and guns.
Atomic Heart also looks like it enjoys the current trend of takedowns like in the most recent Doom game. Combat looks like a variety of up-close-and-personal as well as distance shooting. The only thing the game doesn’t explain is what all of this is and how any of it makes sense.
There are a lot of games out there filled with guns, violence, and action. What sets games apart though is how they turn it into an experience that a player will never forget. Atomic Heart has shown plenty of running and gunning, but there isn’t anything that holds it together. Silent Hill was madness but it was also very likely a gateway to hell, so most of the bizarre inconsistencies or weird occurrences could sort of be explained away. Plus, it was a horror game, and horror games are known for being more about the experience than anything else.
Looking into Atomic Heart, it is hard to see if there is anything beyond a Serious Sam level of logic to it. Yes, the visuals look amazing (largely because they are inspired by so many amazing games), and yes it looks pretty fun. But Mundfish’s complete lack of details is a little concerning for a game that is set to release sometime in the next seven months.
For instance, Mundfish’s blog has a few posts about Atomic Heart, but the details are curiously lacking. One post teases, “Even the toughest times can’t stop two loving hearts from embracing each other.” The blog post then encourages players to explore Atomic Heart to know more, but it seems worth asking if that could even be considered a blog post when it amounts to only two sentences. Another post says there are horrors at the 3826 Facility, a final post says robots have gone mad – but that’s all. There’s no delving into details, and no images or screenshots other than the title image.
2018 is shaping up to be a great year in gaming with Darksiders III, Biomutant, and Vampyr all still on the horizon. We can only hope in the months coming towards Atomic Heart’s release that we finally see a the heart of this game, otherwise it’s just a playground of pretty things.
