It’s obvious that Twitch is the dominant force in streaming, but the extent of their dominion was recently brought to light in a new study from Newzoo.

The marketing analytics company found that of the nearly 2.5 billion hours spent streaming games in the first quarter of 2018, Twitch accounted for 82 percent. YouTube made up only 18 percent, or 481 million total hours.

The one constraint in the report is that it only accounts for the top 20 most watched games overall. Still, it’s safe to assume that these numbers are a pretty fair representation of game streaming as a whole.

One of the big winners for Twitch was League of Legends. The streaming giant claimed an 86.2 percent dominance over YouTube when it came to League. Heroes of the Storm, CSGO, Overwatch, Sea of Thieves, Monster Hunter and more were also streamed on Twitch over YouTube at a rate of at least 80 percent.

YouTube found favor with some less popular games. Casino Games, World of Tanks and Mobile Legends all had higher streaming numbers on YouTube. The one truly big name that YouTube was able to beat Twitch at was Minecraft. The margin was only 60/40, but it still represents one of the only major wins for YouTube.

Of the total Q1 streaming hours, esports only account for 11 percent. Riot is a force to be reckoned with on both platforms. They’re responsible for more than 66% of YouTube’s total esports hours streamed and they’re the most popular esports channel on Twitch by a decent margin.

Both YouTube and Twitch have faced their fair share of problems so far this year, but it hasn’t seemed to impact either all that much. That’s bad news for YouTube, as they’re going to need something to act as a catalyst if they ever hope to compete with Twitch in the streaming realm.
