Fortnite Goes Mobile, PUBG Goes Mobile Too

It might come as a bit of a surprise to hear, but PUBG and Fortnite are actually pretty similar games — shocking, I know.

We’ve covered the similarities between the two games on more than one occasion (from their coinciding 20 million milestones to their simultaneous seasons and everything in between). Now, the two games are going mobile together, or at least at the same time.

After a successful soft-launch in Canada last week, PUBG Mobile officially went live in the United States on Monday. It launched for both Android and iOS devices and is available for anyone who wants to download it.

On the flip side, Fortnite only kind of went live within the last week. Epic’s game is being released on an invite-only basis for now, but anyone and everyone is allowed to sign-up for an invitation and Epic is sending them out on a fairly large scale. For now, the mobile version of Fortnite is only available on iOS, but Epic has said that Android support should come “in the next few months.”

Both mobile games are the same as their console and PC counterparts, only with a few small cosmetic changes to run and feel better on smaller, less powerful devices. For example, Fortnite’s visuals have been downgraded just a bit and some of the audio prompts have been replaced with visual ones for a better noiseless experience, for when you might be playing in a loud area or without headphones.

Unsurprisingly, the changes made to PUBG Mobile are quite similar. Also, PUBG Mobile will be limited to the one original map, for now at least.

One of the coolest aspects of these two games is that fact that there’ll be cross-play between mobile, cosole and PC. Of course, there won’t be cross play between Xbox and PS4 since Sony and Microsoft still can’t work things out, but everyone else will still be able to play together. And it’s worth noting that PUBG is still not available on PS4 anyway, so this really only impacts console Fortnite players.

Also of note is the fact that PUBG Mobile is being published by Tencent Games, one of the largest mobile publishers in China. Tencent owns a number of companies including Supercell, Miniclip, WeBank and, oh yeah, they also own at least 40 percent of Epic Games. Yes, the same Epic Games that created Fortnite.

So next time that you hear about how PUBG and Fortnite are competing against each other, just remember, they’re at least partially owned by the same company and are a lot more connected that you might think.
