Dota 2’s 2018 International Battle Pass Brings New Modes

by | May 9, 2018

Dota 2’s 2018 International Battle Pass is here. As always, it comes with piles of extra content, new cosmetics, and a contribution to the Dota 2 prize pool. Last year’s Dota 2 prize pool was a whopping $24 million, with nearly all of that coming straight from fan contributions through the Battle Pass. This year, Dota 2 will be chipping in almost $1.4 million more and encouraging fans to contribute more as well. We’ll have to see if the new Battle Pass can surpass last year’s, but with what is offered – it just might.

Dota 2 knows its audience. Like with Team Fortress 2, people love cosmetics (and if Dota 2 had a variety of goofy hats – fans would love those too). Cavern Crawl is one of the new challenges to beat regular matches and unlock exclusive item sets, Battle Points, and the Jade Baby Roshan. The pass will also include Chat Wheel Sprays, something that the game hasn’t necessarily needed, but with the popularity of sprays across CS:GO and TF2, it is a surprise that it took this long. Custom Lane Creeps – cavern-themed for this year – will also round out the cosmetics.

But Dota 2 is also looking at new modes. Mutation Mode will feature random changes to the map like Rupture events or the ability to resurrect teammates. The Underhollow is another new mode, but one with new maps and events. It is a multi-team dungeon with three-player squads rushing around the map to earn XP and Gold on a quest for the rarest of cheeses. In other words, it’s a last man standing, and some predict it to be Dota 2’s foray into Battle Royales.

On the esports side, Pro circuit predictions and the international compendium will help players interact more with their favorite teams. The compendium, as usual, will allow predictions, brackets, and fantasy challenges. The Pro circuit predictions will also allow web browsers and mobile devises to connect and bet on the winners of Majors and Minors to try and earn extra Battle Points. Players will also find that collecting a full set of Fantasy Player Cards will give rewards in the area of favorite team sprays.

Of course, Dota 2 is also upping the ante to encourage donations and contributions to the prize pool. If the total pool surpasses last years of $24 million, Dota 2 promises 10,000 Battle Points to every owner of the Battle Pass. Additionally, if the pool surpasses $30 million, all owners will be gifted an additional 10,000 Battle Points.

Battle Points function as experience in Dota 2, so the more points a player earns, the higher their Profile Level will become. This not only allows massive bragging rights, but higher levels in Dota 2 reward varying prizes.

As usual, the Battle Pass also comes in two forms, a Level 1 version for $9.99 and a Level 75 version for $36.99. While both passes comes with plenty of goodies – like Immortal Treasures – the Level 75 version obviously comes with much, much more.

Dota 2 has increased its prize pool every year without fail, and with all the newly added goodies, it seems pretty likely this year will be no exception.
