Sega Announces the Mega Drive Mini
Sega Announces the Mega Drive Mini
The console war between Sega and Nintendo is getting a sequel, this time on a smaller scale. The Mega Drive Mini is Sega’s response to Nintendo’s SNES Classic.
In honor of the 30th anniversary of the original Mega Drive console, or the Sega Genesis as it was called in North America, Sega announced plans to release the Mega Mini Drive, a pewee sized console based on the original. As of right now, there’s no news on what games will be available for the Mega Mini Drive, but knowing Sega, it will probably have at least one Sonic game on it.
This isn’t the only nostalgia play from the former gaming giant. They also recently announced that several classic Sega games would be getting Switch ports. The games will come out some time this summer and right now the list includes Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Thunder Force IV, Gain Ground and of course, Sonic the Hedgehog.
This isn’t the first time Sega tried to cash in on console nostalgia. Just last year they partnered with Atgames to make the Sega Genesis Flashback, which didn’t exactly please critics or consumers. Unfortunately for any detractors of Atgames, it was revealed in a now deleted Facebook post that Atgames would be handling the hardware for the Genesis Mini too.
