Tony Hawk Skates Away from Activision and Pro Skater Franchise
It has now been officially confirmed that the partnership between pro skater Tony Hawk and Activision, the publisher of the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series, is over.
On Monday, Tony Hawk tweeted out a response to fans of the series who were asking about reboots or remasters.
To anyone asking me to ‘remaster” old games, or complaining about THPS servers being down: Activision owns the THPS license but I am no longer working with them. If I had the skills / authority to reboot servers or code games for newer systems on my own, I would be happy to…

With Hawks departure and the incredibly negative reception of the most recent game, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5, the future of the THPS franchise is not promising.
Pro Skater 5 was the lowest rated game in the entire franchise, by a lot. The game suffers from innumerable problems, but its most fatal flaw is that everything is online. To do anything at all, including play the various single players modes or the free skate mode, you must be actively online.
What makes this even worse is that the games servers are currently down, making the game practically unplayable. If this is the end of THPS, it’s a sad end indeed.
The first Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game was released way back in 1999. Its sequel, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, came out a year later and received critical acclaim. To this day, it’s still considered by many to be the penultimate skating game.
The first four Pro Skater games and some of the early spinoffs had been developed by the company Neversoft, who also developed several games for the Guitar Hero series. Neversoft merged with Activision’s Infinity Ward in 2014 to assist with the development of the Call of Duty franchise. As a result, the later games in the series, including Pro Skater 5, were developed by the studio Robomodo.
It’s not all doom and gloom though, there is still some hope for fans of skating games. Activision may hold the rights to the title Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, but Hawk has expressed interest in making more games and working with other video game publishers in the past. A future with Tony Hawk-inspired skating games is still a real possibility.
And if you’re really into the THPS of old, there’s a documentary based on Hawk’s involvement in the franchise, titled Pretending I’m a Superman: The Tony Hawk Game Story, currently in the works.
